DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A woman is ambushed on her way to work -- shot at an apartment complex in Dallas early Wednesday morning. The incident happened shortly after 5:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of Royal Lane.

Officers responded to the Spanish Garden Apartments after receiving reports of gunfire. When they arrived they found a woman lying on the ground in the parking lot. The victim was rushed to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Her current condition is not known.

According to a man who lives at the apartment complex, the woman had just walked out of the front door of an apartment, and was walking downstairs to get in a vehicle, when she was shot "multiple" times.

The witness said after the shots were fired he heard a woman screaming for help. He said he went and did everything he could to help and stayed with her until paramedics arrived.

Dallas crime scene detectives were gathering clues at the complex and late Wednesday morning could be seen picking up shell casings in the parking lot.

As it stands there's been no information released about the shooter or the search for the suspect/suspects.

Police say the crime doesn't appear to be a robbery gone wrong, because nothing was taken.  Officials say their investigation is ongoing.
