ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - A woman was shot after not giving up her car during an attempted carjacking because she had her three-year-old in the back seat.

Arlington Police say the woman was visiting a friend in the 2700 block of Roberts Circle when she got in her car and a man with his face covered came up and pointed a gun at her demanding her car.

After she refused, the suspect fired two rounds into the car, hitting the woman in the hip.  The other bullet left a large hole in the driver's side window.

"The motherly instincts took over in protection of the child that was in the back seat," said Arlington Police Sergeant Brad Norman.

The shooter then ran away.  Witnesses said the man was in a black hoodie and had a blue bandanna over his face.

The mother was rushed to Arlington Memorial Hospital and was released Friday evening and is home resting.

The child was not hurt.

Police searched for the gunman with K-9s but the scent went cold near the end of the block.
