KEMP (CBSDFW.COM) - Sheriff's deputies have arrested a woman for stealing an ambulance from a Kaufman hospital, before leading officers on a chase across city lines.

The woman, who was apparently a patient at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, located at 850 Ed Hall Dr. in Kaufman, hit and damaged several cars as she sped away.  Police say the CareFlight ambulance was in the hospital parking lot when the suspect through a crowd and took off in it.

Kaufman city police were soon joined by the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department, which finally brought the vehicle to stop miles later west of Kemp.  The ambulance initially started northwest toward Dallas when it took a U-Turn and returned to Kaufman before going through town, getting back onto highway 175, and heading south.

"They chased her through town, out the south end of town and caught her in the county road out there," said Kaufman Police Chief Dana Whitaker.  Officers finally got her to stop by spiking the ambulance tires.  The ambulance was recovered and is now at a local impound lot.

The suspect has been booked into the Kaufman County Jail, where she will be charged with theft of the ambulance and fleeing charges.  She will have to be arraigned before her name and mugshot will be released.
