Woman And Baby Found Dead In Field Identified

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The identity of the woman found dead in a Fort Worth field near the scene of a car crash was released by the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.

Lindsay Groce, 27, was found dead in a field on Tuesday along with a 13-month-old child.

"Just horrified," said Caroline McLendon, a family friend.

McLendon said she lives next door from the Groce's father and mother.

"I wanted to tell her how sorry I was that this has happened to that lovely family," said McLendon.

Having lost her son, McLendon remembers how Groce's mother embraced and hugged her after his passing.

"I never forgot it. It was the best thing. It exceeded any words and I wanted to return that to her," said McLendon.

A source has told CBS 11 News that there were no obvious signs of foul play found on their bodies.

Groce was naked, and her clothes were found strewn in the field, indicating she disrobed as she walked with the child from her wrecked vehicle, said the source, with direct knowledge of the case.

She was found on top of the child, and their bodies were several hundred feet from the car.

With no visible injuries, other than "a few scratches," investigators are moving away from the case being a homicide, according to the source, who added that hypothermia had not been ruled out as a cause of the deaths.

"It was very, very odd," said McLendon.

Being unfortunately all too familiar with the pain of losing a child, McLendon said her heart goes out to the Groce family.

"It's a big hole in the family, irreplaceable," said McLendon.

A cause of death has not be determined.

CBS 11 Senior Investigative Producer Jack Douglas Jr. contributed to this report.
