Wise County residents allowed to return home after Boones Creek grassfire prompts evacuations
WISE COUNTY, Texas (CBSNewsTexas.com) - Residents are allowed to return to their homes in Wise County now that crews have control of a grassfire near Runaway Bay.
According to Wise County Emergency Management, the grassfire started Wednesday afternoon, near the Hyde Cemetery, near CR 3701 and Valley Ridge Dr.
Texas A&M Forest Service says the fire is approximately 80 acres and 70% contained. Active air operations took place and two dozers were on the scene.
Just before 3 p.m., Runaway Bay police began evacuations on Port O Call Dr.
Around 8:30 p.m., Wise County OEM said conditions were safe enough for residents to return home.
"Please use caution as you return to your homes as emergency crews are still working in the area," Wise County OEM said in an update. "Patrols will continue throughout the night to ensure containment lines are holding and monitor the fire conditions. Residents in the area may see hotspots burning overnight. Additional crews will return to the area early [Thursday] morning to continue work and ensure the fire is completely out."
According to the Wise County EOC command, suppression efforts will likely continue overnight and Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System will remain on the scene.
