Winter Weather Slows Down Air Travel

GRAPEVINE (CBSDFW.COM) - The new year is not starting out on a happy note for some holiday travelers. Chilly temperatures and rain chances have created wet and even icy conditions in parts of North Texas. The winter weather is having an impact on Thursday travel plans.

The ice threat has made some roadways dangerous, but it is also slowing down air travel.

Much of the Metroplex was spared from significant ice coverage, and that includes DFW International Airport runways. But the planes sit above the surface, and could not avoid the thin layer of frost. Crews were forced to prepare the planes for de-icing procedures early Thursday morning.

The process has created delays at DFW International Airport, and Dallas Love Field as well.

DFW International Airport is also seeing several canceled flights, mostly for travelers heading into the Rockies and the southwest part of the nation, where the ice storm has been much worse. Travelers are urged to check the status of their flights before heading out to the airport on Thursday.

More people are expected to be traveling on Friday, and stormy weather will remain in much of the Midwest. Plus, any travelers delayed on Thursday will still be jockeying for flights on Friday. So, expect the slow air travel to continue into the weekend.
