DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - In this week's Wednesday's Warriors, we visit with the Hinojosa family of Dallas and a little boy named Max who has blood cancer.

"With him they thought he didn't have an immune system, they thought he had a virus, thought it might be an infectious disease. They really had no idea," said Max's mother Sara.

Now nearly 3-years-old, Max's main focus today is trains and firetrucks. The 45 day search by doctors after he was born ending in the words "juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia" is far behind him, but his diagnosis remains.

Max's cancer is extremely rare. One of the first resources the Hinojosa's turned to for answers about it is the website for leukemia and lymphoma society.

"I didn't know what leukemia was until my son had it," said Sara. "They were instrumental in getting us support, letting us know we're not alone... that there's other people in this."

Last year, Max inspired others as the honored hero for The Big D Climb with his firefighter Dad.

And today, Max's best path to a possible cure is a stem cell transplant. But between now and when that might happen, the family relies on hope, prayer, and a lesson they learned in the journey they never saw coming.

"The number one thing, is you are your child's advocate. Doctors are there, information is there, but at the end of the day, you are your childs advocate," said Sara.
