NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dr. Robert Collins of UT Southwestern Medical Center is working to cure the most deadly forms of leukemia, known as AML.
Amazing things are happening.
"I hate having to realize we've lost a patient," says Dr. Collins who takes the disease personally.
He's been at UT Southwestern for 18 years and is currently the leader for the Bone Marrow Transplant Research Team. But he's also a part of a small national research group, two years into a study funded largely by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
They are changing the way we attack Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
"The whole idea is to make it more targeted, instead of just broad based toxic chemotherapy, we're really trying to get away from that," said Dr. Colins.
