NORTH TEXAS (CBSNewsTexas.com) -- The CBS News Texas First Alert Weather Team has issued a Weather Alert for today. We're tracking the potential for strong to severe storms to develop in parts of North Texas this afternoon and evening.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for parts of North Texas through 10 p.m. The rest of the area remains fairly capped this afternoon, but we're expecting that cap to erode away as the cold front gets closer. More counties could get added to the thunderstorm watch as we enter the early evening hours.

Rain and storm coverage should become more widespread into the 5 p.m. hour. Most of the severe activity should be waning after 10 p.m. Friday.

The main threat looks to be damaging winds with any severe storms that develop. Hail will pose an issue, but we expect hail cores to weaken faster with any severe storms that develop. The threat for heavy rain with these storms will come into play around the evening drive time, as well, so we'll have to watch isolated flooding issues. The tornado threat appears to be low.

Into the weekend, partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies are expected but the area should remain mainly dry. We left a 10% chance in early Saturday morning for isolated showers, but overall it should be a pleasant weekend.
