Weather Alert continues Monday evening as severe storms move through metroplex
NORTH TEXAS — A Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 1 a.m. for Collin, Delta, Ellis, Fannin, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Lamar, Navarro, Rains, Rockwall and Van Zandt counties.
Despite a strong cap that was still very evident with the National Weather Service's 3 p.m. special balloon sounding, it appears storms will continue to develop through North Texas this evening thanks to a dry line.
Governor Greg Abbott directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to ready state emergency response resources ahead of a severe storm system moving across the state Monday.
"Texas stands ready to swiftly deploy any emergency resources needed and help local officials keep their communities safe as severe weather begins to impact multiple regions of the state," said Abbott. "I urge Texans in at-risk areas to take safety precautions, regularly monitor weather conditions, and heed the guidance of state and local officials to protect themselves and their loved ones. I thank the hardworking emergency response personnel who will help protect their communities over the course of these storms."
The most significant threats remain large hail and wind damage. There's a window through 8 p.m. where there's a low, isolated tornado threat for areas to the northwest.
A severe thunderstorm was located over Springtown just before 6:30 p.m., moving east at 50 mph. Sixty-five mph wind gusts and half dollar size hail can be expected.
Once the storms exit east after midnight, we wait for a cold front to arrive. It'll certainly be colder Tuesday morning compared to early Monday, and in the afternoon it'll be windy and cooler with highs for most only getting into the 60s.
