WATCH: UT Kicker Drills 80 Yard FG With Room To Spare

By Ross Kelly

When you think about it, pretty much every position in football, except kickers and punters, all require a teammate in order to practice. Whether it is passing, receiving, tackling, or blocking; you need a counterpart in order to mimic a game situation. But those special teams guys are different (in a lot of ways). They can effectively practice in basic solitude which is why we see so many videos of kickers kicking as opposed to after-practice videos of RBs juking defenders.

The act of kickers uploading videos of themselves booting long field goals is nothing new. Pros all the way down to high school kids are always eager to show off their leg strength with kicking videos. But I can't ever recall seeing an (undoctored) video of an 80+ yard field goal, until now.

Nick Rose is the University of Texas' starting kicker and is entering his senior season. He easily converts from 80 yards in UT's DKR Stadium and appears to have a little extra room to spare. Would that have been good from 85? Possibly. What if that kick was made in the thin air of Colorado's Sports Authority Field? Good from 90?

In case you're wondering, Rose's career long in a game is 51 yards. For comparison's sake, the longest official field goals at every level are as follows:

NFL - 64 yards by Matt Prater of the Broncos in 2013

NCAA - 69 yards by Ove Johansson of Abilene Christian in 1976

High School - 68 yards by Dirk Borgognone (Nevada) in 1985

According to legend, Raiders' K Sebastian Janikowski booted one in high school practice from 82 yards. No video to confirm this but I wouldn't doubt Seabass.
