Wants Of Needy Kids At Christmas Questioned

DALLAS (CBS11) - Some Christmas tree angel requests are raising eyebrows among folks who feel the request are getting too expensive and too extravagant.
A few tags from children in need include iPhone 7s, Apple watches, TVs and video game systems.
"That's nuts. This is off of a giving tree?" questioned Jordan Chester.
Chester and others said they do not even have any of the items listed on some of the wish lists.
"I mean you want some nicer things, some toys and things. An iPhone watch? Who needs that at 13? Who needs that at nine? Who needs a tablet at nine really?" questioned Chester.
The giving trees are put on by the charity, The Bridge Connection, which has nearly 30 posts spread throughout the DFW Metroplex.
"I agree some of them are extravagant. This is what a child is asking for. So you can't dictate what they want and don't want," said Tamara Lorenz.
Ginger Shocklee with The Bridge Connection said some of her volunteers at locations were concerned and fielded complaints regarding a few of the requests.
"Whether they live in an RV at the lake or they live in a 4,000 square foot house, they're going to ask for electronics for Christmas," said Shocklee.
She said the charity shifted this year to an electronic application for families as opposed to in-person interview where they could guide families through the process.
"We're not here to judge our guests or their wish lists, we're just here to serve them," said Shocklee.
If someone cannot afford a certain request, Shocklee said they should look for another tag because there are plenty of children in need for all budgets.
"Don't be mad at the child for wanting something. That's their desire, that's what they want. Don't take it out on the child," said Lorenz.
The Salvation Army said is conducts in-person interview and tries to suggest gifts that are more affordable or wide-ranging in prices to ensure there is something under the tree.
