Victim's Mom Testifies In Keller Murder Case

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The woman from Keller who has been accused of killing her husband three years ago was back in court on Friday as her murder trial continued. But suspect Michele Williams did not take the witness stand.

The victim was Greg Williams, and his mother testified on Thursday afternoon. Betty Middlebrooks told the jury a little bit about her son, breaking down in tears while pointing out the man in a photograph.

Middlebrooks stated that Greg Williams was happy, and had many plans for the future with his family. "He wanted to retire early so he could travel with his family," the mother said. "He had a plan. He wanted to retire at 45 so he could be devoted to his family."

Prosecutors argue that Michele Williams killed her husband at their home for life insurance money. But the defense says that he died from suicide. The trial resumed on Friday morning with five defense witnesses.

The defendent in this case is being referred to as "the black widow." She altered her story twice in the days after her husband's death, first blaming the murder on an intruder, then saying that she staged a break-in scene to cover up his suicide in order to protect the couple's 4-year-old daughter. But at one point, Michele Williams even admitted to firing the gun that killed Greg Williams.

Middlebrooks cited the strange behavior on the witness stand Thursday, saying that she was surprised that her daughter-in-law never called to tell her about what had happened. "I never heard from her," the mother said. "I kept thinking I would, but no, I did not."

After the defense rested its case on Friday morning, the jury was sent home for the weekend. Closing arguments are set to begin on Monday.
