DALLAS (CBS11) - Parkland Hospital started its "Walk-in Wednesday" campaign this week for parents who need to get their children immunized before the first day of school.

They don't need an appointment.

"School nurses have been sending notes since the end of the year," said nurse Raven Gayle.

The notes are intended to remind parents not to wait until the last minute, like so many often do.

Last year, hundreds of families waited for up to three hours at the Dallas County Health Department in the last few days before classes started.

"When you think about getting ready for school… you think about clothes. You think about supplies. You think about the shots last," said Gayle.

The state requires students to have updated vaccination forms to attend class.
