UT Chancellor Cigarroa Resigning
AUSTIN (AP) - University of Texas System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa says he's resigning because he's accomplished the goals he set five years ago, not because of political turmoil surrounding the Board of Regents in recent months.
Cigarroa announced Monday he's leaving to be the head of pediatric transplant surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
Cigarroa's tenure includes creating a new university in South Texas, which will have a medical school, and a new medical school at the flagship Austin campus.
He also pushed to get more schools recognized as top-tier research universities.
Cigarroa's tenure also has been marked by tensions between the board, state lawmakers and Austin campus President Bill Powers. Lawmakers are considering impeachment of Regent Wallace Hall Jr., over attempts to force Powers out.
