New Doobie Brothers Album Full Of Surprises
ALLEN (CBSDFW.COM) - The Doobie Brothers played a sold out show with Boston at the Allen Event Center Wednesday night.
"Our old fans force their children to listen to us. And their children now are forcing their children to listen to us… so it's working out just as we planned," said Patrick Simmons, who wrote the group's first #1 record, "Black Water."
Allen was the second city of only 4 shows in June before the Doobie Brothers start their tour with Peter Frampton.
"This tour we're doing the front, middle and end of what Doobie's music has been over the years," said lead vocalist Tom Johnston. He credits the band's longevity to help from radio, live-streaming online and fired up crowds for the Doobie Brother's longevity.
"We are extremely fortunate we have been able to do it this long. The interaction with the crowd has kept the band going all these years. They're the ones that give you the energy," said Johnston.
Simmons agreed and stressed the importance of giving back to their fans. "High energy. We're rockin' pretty much through all of the show. We have a certain amount of time to play so we're putting the energy out there from the top pretty much!"
Comprised of two drummers, a bass player, piano player, three vocalists/guitarists and a saxophone player, The Doobie Brothers quickly had fans on their feet, rocking out and singing along.
They opened with two hit songs, "Jesus Is Just Alright" and "Rockin' Down The Highway." Their third song, "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me)," featured a saxophone solo by Marc Russo. The living legends failed to disappoint by finishing their set with "China Grove" and "Listen to the Music."
It was a fitting end to a show that captured the essence of what the Doobies are all about – a classic mix of rock 'n' roll, funk, rhythm and blues and country. In fact, the band just wrapped their latest project, a country album produced by David Huff. Huff is best known for starting the 80s hard rock band, Giant.
"We've already done it. It was cut really fast and has some really incredible musicians... and all the people that helped out are really fantastic so we're really excited about it," said Johnston.
The Doobies new album will feature some of country music's hottest artists.
"We worked with Brad Paisley, Zach Brown Band, Toby Keith and Sara Evans," said Simmons.
Former Doobie Brother and five-time Grammy Award-winning artist Michael McDonald also collaborated on the new album.
"Yeah Michael's got three songs on it so he's part of the Doobie section," said Johnston of the album."It's Doobie songs redone with a lot of well-known country artists."
The new album, which was backed by Sony is set for release in the fall of 2014.
