They have 6 Grammy nominations, have toured all over the globe and are widely recognized as one of the best jazz bands on the planet - and they are based right here in Denton. KRLDs Austin York takes a look at the University of North Texas' One O'clock band.

It all started back on campus in 1946 when Gene Hall the founding director wanted to teach his students music in a different way.

UNT Professor John Murphy with the Division of Jazz Studies says the teaching methods took - and soon the band started to get some recognition.

The band has performed and toured all over the world including places like Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, and Russia and earned 6 Grammy nominations along the way.

Alumni have gone on to be musicians on Broadway and played in movies and TV.

One of the biggest names is a Grammy award winner herself.

Murphy says while the teaching is the same, they are changing with the times.

And while they are extremely well known all over the world, Murphy says locally they could always use a little help.

He says check them out...because they are as good as ever.
