LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lightweight title contender Gilbert Melendez has been suspended for one year by the UFC for failing a post-fight drug test.
The UFC announced the suspension Monday.
Melendez also has been removed from a scheduled bout against Al Iaquinta in San Diego on July 15.
Melendez (22-5) tested positive for testosterone metabolites from an external source after his split-decision loss to Eddie Alvarez in Mexico City on June 13.
Melendez says he accepts the suspension. He says he "did not inject anything," but realizes he is responsible for the products he consumes.
Melendez had two recent shots at the UFC lightweight title, dropping a decision to Benson Henderson in April 2013 and losing by submission to Anthony Pettis last December.
The San Francisco-based Southern California native was the Strikeforce lightweight champion.
