UConn Favored Over SMU To Win American Athletic Conference

DALLAS, Texas (AP) - Defending national champion UConn has been picked by coaches in the American Athletic Conference as a preseason favorite to edge out SMU for the league title.

Huskies point Guard Ryan Boatright was chosen as the preseason player of the year and UConn freshman Daniel Hamilton was picked as the league's preseason rookie of the year. The poll was released Wednesday in conjunction with the league's annual media day in New York.

The Huskies received six first-place votes in the poll and the Mustangs claimed the other five. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.

Boatright was joined on the conference preseason first team by SMU guard Nic Moore and forward Markus Kennedy, Memphis forwards Shaq Goodwin and Austin Nichols and Tulsa guard James Woodard.

Memphis is picked to finish third in the conference followed by Cincinnati, Tulsa, Temple, Houston, USF, UCF, East Carolina and Tulane.
