IRVING (CBS 11 NEWS) - Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) say they are going to fast-track contract work to fix a damaged bridge in Irving, after a truck crash into it on Friday.

The crash into the Highway 183 eastbound bridge, over Loop 12 North, closed the highway junction and backed up traffic for some six hours.

Irving police will investigate the claim made by the truck driver who hit the bridge. Police say the driver, who works for Champion Waste & Recycling, told them that the lift-arm on his truck suddenly went up, catching on the bridge.

Three beams will need to be replaced, keeping the right lane and shoulder closed on eastbound 183 for several weeks.

The lanes above and below the site were closed for hours Friday afternoon, as TxDOT crews cleaned up the debris and cleared the truck from the scene.

Crews put a cage around the damaged section to keep loose concrete from falling.

A TxDOT spokesperson said inspectors are confident the damage is not a hazard.

This is the second time the overpass has been hit. TxDOT says the beams hit were not that old: they were replaced in 2006 when a crane hit the bridge and took out several cross beams.

A spokesperson for the agency says it will likely be next week before repairs begin.
