TWU Elects 1st Male Student Body President
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - For the first time in the school's history, the student body at Texas Woman's University has elected a man as its Student Government Association president. Landon Dickerson is a 21-year-old pre-med junior from Houston who is currently studying biology.
Dickerson was not even aware of the history-making feat that he had accomplished until after the election was over. "Being the first male elected never even entered my mind," he said. "I wanted to be SGA president because I have a heart for people and a need to serve."
The junior transferred to TWU from Xavier University of Louisiana in 2012. He has been involved with the Denton school's student government for the last two years. "My experience at TWU has been a turning point in developing my leadership capabilities," Dickerson said. "I ran for SGA president to make a difference."
And while Dickerson is the first man elected to the president position in the university's 113-year history, he is actually not the first man to serve in that role. Russell Mariott was appointed as president in 2005 to complete a term in the spring semester.
TWU is the nation's largest university primarily for women. The school enrolls around 15,000 students and includes campuses in Denton, Dallas and Houston.
