Traffic Alert: Cone Zone At SH 26 & John McCain

COLLEYVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - A three foot plunge is just one of the obstacles drivers have faced recently during construction at the intersection of Texas State Highway 26 and John McCain in Colleyville.

It's a traffic nightmare the city and many local businesses want to end.

"It's a hassle. It's really a hassle," said driver Jose Rodriguez.

The afternoon rush hour is usually Rodriguez's busiest time of day. But since construction started to widen SH 26, business at his Kwik DryClean Super Center has dropped by 20 percent.

"At about 5 o'clock you don't even want to come here. People have actually told us that," complained Rodriguez.

Work on the road started two years ago, but complaints have spiked in the last two weeks after a change in the flow of traffic.

Many drivers have mistaken a break in the median for a U-turn and their have cars fallen down a three foot drop in between lanes as a result.

"My next door neighbor drove off the edge about two weeks ago," one driver told CBS 11 News.

Traffic lights malfunctioning are also a problem.

"There's sometimes where you can't even turn, there's sometimes where it would just stay green, there's sometimes where it would just stay yellow," said Rodriguez.

TxDOT claimed they have fixed the problem. Additionally the city has a uniformed officer controlling the lights during peak hours as a caution.

The roadwork should wrap up next spring or summer. But delays in the work have many people shaking their heads; critical of the dangerous cone zone.

"They keep changing it so I don't believe anything they say," said Rodriguez.
