Tornado Sirens Malfunction, Disrupt Neighborhood

FORT WORTH (CBSFDW.COM) - Residents of the Meadowbrook neighborhood in East Fort Worth are fed up with tornado sirens that keep going off there.

The warning system is on the fritz, causing false alarms and keeping people awake.

The sirens kept resident Debbie Lile's granddaughter from falling asleep. Lile says she is concerned the false alarms are also giving people a false sense of security.

"Other neighbors were like la di da, getting their groceries in… didn't even stop to look. I'm like 'golly, are we going to be prepared if something really does happen?'"

The alarms went off Wednesday night, at 5 and 6 a.m. Thursday morning and again at 7 p.m.

Hundreds of residents called Fort Worth police and fire dispatch to complain.

A team from the city's office of emergency management is working on what they call a "system malfunction."
