FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A family is grieving the loss of a three-year-old little boy who drowned Saturday night on Lake Worth. Fort Worth Police said this remains under investigation.

Investigators said the family of the boy had been at the lake during the day, and they were about to leave. As they were getting out of the water, the family removed the little boy's floatation device.

Police said when the family turned to go, the child was suddenly missing.

Another family member found the boy in the lake and pulled him out of the water. The family called for help and began performing CPR.

Paramedics took the boy to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Jasmine Reyes and her family were setting up a barbecue nearby when they saw the police collecting evidence by the beach. She said this is a painful reminder of how quickly a tragedy can happen.

"It's heartbreaking, but I mean they were about to leave. They did the right thing putting that floating device on the child, but kids are so quick. As soon as you take your eyes off of them, they're gone," Reyes said.

Police stress that this case remains under investigation, but they say at this point details point to an unintentional accident.
