Two Officers Dead, One Injured After Shooting In Palm Springs

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Palm Springs police said three officers were shot Saturday afternoon, and two of the officers died as a result of their injuries.
A police statement said the shooting occurred Saturday afternoon north of Racquet Club Road and east of Sunrise Way.
Police said during media briefing that the officers were responding to a "family disturbance" call.
"It was a simple family disturbance and he elected to open fire on the guardians of the city," police Chief Bryan Reyes, his voice breaking, told reporters.
CBS Los Angeles reports the officers who lost their lives are Jose Gilbert Vega, a 35-year veteran who was set to retire in December and Lesley Zerebny, a 27-year-old new mother. Zerebny just came back to work after giving birth four months ago.
