TYLER (AP) - Authorities in East Texas have seized thousands of marijuana plants from a growing operation spread across three fields.

Smith County law enforcement shut down the operation Tuesday. According to Sheriff Larry Smith, investigators arrived at one site and found one of the farmers watering the plants before he fled law enforcement.

Authorities said parts of the fields were inaccessible by truck and trailer, so some plants were moved to an open field by helicopter to be counted.

Smith said he believes the farmers had been there for quite some time and that the plants were intended for distribution far beyond Smith County.
