FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - No sooner had Fort Worth Police officers installed a brand new air conditioning unit for a family in need, than it was stolen.

"What kind of people would do that?," asked the victim of the break-in, Jessica Torres.

While responding to a call earlier in the month, officers noticed Torres and her family did not have any air-conditioning at their home.

The officers returned a few days later to install two air conditioning units donated by the Home Depot in Lake Worth.

But while the family was out of town, crooks decided to help themselves to one of the brand new units.

"They didn't do [anything] bad to us. They did it to the kids," said Torres, explaining the thieves stole the unit that cools her children's room.

She reported the break-in to Fort Worth Police who did not hesitate to help the family again.

Bright and early Monday morning, three officers along with a Home Depot employee got to work, to right a wrong.

"Fort Worth PD is on your trail. If you come back and get this one, we're going to replace it, but we're also going to be waiting for you," said Home Depot employee, Warren Garrett, who helped the family in his free time.

In a week, Torres' children saw the ugly side of human nature, but also some of the best it has to offer.

"It's not about writing tickets and putting people in jail. This is what it's about right here: helping," Garrett said.
