Texas Woman, 85, Sentenced For DA Murder Plot

CONROE, Texas (AP) — An 85-year-old Montgomery County woman has received three long prison terms related to a plot to hire a hit man to kill a district attorney.

Dorothy Clark Canfield pleaded guilty in August. She isn't eligible for parole for more than 12 years.

A judge in Conroe sentenced her Thursday to 25- and 10-year sentences for trying to kill an assistant prosecutor and maim the elected district attorney.

She also received another 18 years for a scam where she pocketed $100,000 to fill out forms for immigrants but did nothing.

An informant last year tipped authorities to her plan. Then a detective posing as a hit man recorded her saying she had $647,000 as proof she could pay.

Court records showed she had theft and forgery cases going back 20 years.
