Texas Teen Killed At Boy Scout Camp After Tree Falls On Tent

COVINGTON, GA (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Authorities say a 14-year-old boy from Cypress, Texas was killed when a tree fell on his tent at a Georgia Boy Scout camp.

Newton County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jeff Alexander told news outlets Monday that the incident occurred at the Bert Adams Scout Camp in Newton County.

Powerful storms had rolled through the area downing a reported 50 to 60 trees, including the one that fell on the boy's tent.

The teen was participating in a scout gathering.

According to CBS News another boy was in the tent at the time, but he survived.

Atlanta Area Council Boy Scouts of America CEO Tracy Techau said in a statement the death is a "difficult time for our Scouting family." The teen was participating in a Scout gathering when the incident occurred Monday at the Bert Adams Scout Camp in Newton County, north of Atlanta.

Authorities did not release the teen's name.
