Texas Regents Unanimously Approve Strong Contract
AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — University of Texas regents unanimously approved the contract for head football coach Charlie Strong on Monday.
The 5-year contract, worth about $25 million, was approved during a special telephone conference on Monday morning.
The terms of the deal were also released, revealing a number of performance bonuses on the table.
By winning the Big 12 Championship, Strong would receive $100,000. And if he leads Texas to its first national title since 2006 -- a $250,000 payout.
The terms also include incentives for team academic performance (up to $150k) , coach of the year voting (up to $100k), and a payout for finishing in the Top 10 of final rankings.
Strong will also receive the use of one suite, a number of season tickets, and the use of a two courtesy cars from a local dealership.
Strong spent the last four years at Louisville and he will be Texas' first African-American head coach of a Longhorns men's team. Strong went 23-3 the last two seasons at Louisville. He was introduced as the new Longhorns coach on Jan. 6.
The hiring of Strong upset at least one prominent Texas supporter, businessman Red McCombs, who publicly criticized the move but later apologized to Strong.
Brown spent 16 seasons at Texas and won the 2005 national championship. He resigned in December.
