Texas Not Set On Starting QB For Trip To USC

AUSTIN (AP) - Texas coach Tom Herman isn't saying who will start at quarterback against No. 4 Southern Cal this weekend.

Herman says regular starter Shane Buechele must come back from a sore shoulder — but even if he does, freshman Sam Ehlinger could still win the job.

Buechele sat out last week's 56-0 win over San Jose State. Ehlinger got the start and threw for 222 yards while sharing snaps with wide receiver Jerrod Heard, who started several games at quarterback in 2015.

Buechele is the more polished passer but is 5-8 as a starter. He set several school freshman passing records in 2016 and passed for 375 yards in a season-opening loss to Maryland. He finished that game but was held out of practice last week with a bruised throwing shoulder.
