Texas Lawmakers Want More Protection Following Run-In With Gun Rights Activists
AUSTIN, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Open Carry Gun activists wandering the hallways of the Capitol building in Austin have some state lawmakers calling for heightened security.
The problem began Tuesday when Several Open Carry activists visited the office of Rep. Pancho Nevarezone (D-Eagle Pass) and got into a heated exchange regarding run rights, some telling the elected official "you're a tyrant to the constitution" and "you won't be here very long...we the people are coming to take Texas back."
According to reports, the group finally left without incident, but it has lawmakers asking for more power and heightened security.
State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer's House administration bill now gives the lawmakers more power over their own office, even allowing for even panic buttons to be installed.
He said he believes some lawmakers already had office panic buttons, though the Department of Public Safety had no immediate comment.
The change says DPS will ensure any House member can request a panic button, and makes paying for them easier.
