TERRELL (CBSDFW.COM) – A hysterical father was heard pounding on the Terrell Police Department doors Tuesday afternoon. When police responded they found the father and a crying toddler at the fire station next door. Paramedics were caring for a 1-year-old who had a gunshot wound to the neck. The child was later transported by Care Flight to Children's Medical Center in Dallas.

Police found Elroy Caleb Middleton's truck parked the wrong way in the entrance of the police parking lot. Inside the running vehicle was a 2-year-old and a 9mm handgun. Investigators also discovered an exit hole in the right rear passenger door of the truck.

The police are looking into the cause of the incident, but it's believed the children were left in the running vehicle while the father was just feet away.

Middleton initially stated that he was "with security" at nearby Southwestern Christian College. He is not a licensed security officer, nor does he have a licensed to carry permit.

A full investigation is being conducted into the incident and any applicable charges will be filed at the conclusion of the investigation.
