DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A teenager is dead and her mother is in the hospital after a stabbing early Monday in the Lake Highlands area of northeast Dallas. It happened just after 1:30 a.m. at the Madison Apartment Complex, located in the 12800 block of Jupiter Road, just south of the LBJ Freeway.

Detectives have the suspect in custody for questioning, but he has not been charged at this time. Police said that he is someone whom the mother knew, possibly a boyfriend. The suspect's name has not yet been released.

Officers explained that the man stabbed both women several times. It is not clear who called for help.

The 18-year-old daughter collapsed after running out of the second-floor apartment unit. Law enforcement officials have been knocking on doors at the complex to see if there were any potential witnesses. There is a trail of blood leading down a hallway and stairwell.

Both of the victims were taken to Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, but the teenage daughter did not survive. The mother is in serious condition, but she is expected to be okay.

Three guys live across the hall from where the violent attack took place. Two of them said that the mother just moved into the complex about a week ago, and had been decorating. They do not recall seeing a man. One of the neighbors heard the woman yell "please don't hurt me," but he did not realize what was happening. He now regrets not calling for help.

"It's crazy, because I heard the screaming and I could have done something," said neighbor Fernando Cruz, "but I didn't think nothing like that would ever happen in front of my door."

"You never think, especially like he said, in front of us," added neighbor Cesar Lopez. "Waking up, hearing the cops, seeing the blood everywhere. You're like, what would have happened if I would have been outside? I would have seen something. He would have came at us."
