Teen Accused Of Killing Parents, Neighbors Try To Understand Why
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) - As Frisco Police put together the pieces of a double murder on a quiet residential street, next door neighbors struggle to understand how a teenager could be accused of the crime.
Police received a 911 call from the home on Shepherd's Hill Lane at 2 a.m. Monday. When they arrived, they found the bodies of Ryan Callens, 48, and his wife Maria Elena Callens, 49. Police identified the couple's 16 year old son as the suspect, and took him into custody. Another relative was home at the time.
"At this time, we don't know exactly how it all fits other than that they were all family," said Officer Chad LaPrelle.
LaPrelle would not say how the first responders determined the 16 year old to be the suspect. The officer would not say where the weapon came from, or what kind of firearm was used on the crime.
Monday afternoon, the teen was taken to the Collin County Juvenile Detention Center, charged with two counts of murder.
"I just can't believe it. It's sad," said Daisy Caceres. Caceres lives next door to the Callens, and saw the teenager helping his dad work on a fence in the backyard just one day earlier.
"They were so very nice and looked like a happy family," said Daisy's father, Fausto Caceres, who woke up to police pounding on his front door.
Neighbors identified the teenaged suspect as the youngest of the Callens' five children. In family photos on social media the parents and children are seen smiling and hugging.
A neighbor across the street describes the parents as strict, and sheltering of their youngest son. Police say the teen was homeschooled.
"He was a really nice person. Like you could get along with him. He wasn't shy or anything," said Natalie Benitez, who lives across the street.
Police will not speculate on a motive or the circumstances surrounding the shootings. The teenager charged with the killings is expected to have a court hearing in the near future.
