Teacher Group Fights DISD Home Rule Charter
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The heated 'home rule' debate in the Dallas Independent School District is about to hit another road block. The largest teacher group in Texas is now threatening legal action.
Dallas ISD trustees are still in the process of selecting who will be on the committee that will be tasked with drafting the home rule charter. They were asked to do so after verifying that enough signatures were provided in support of the home rule move. But now, legal action could prevent that process from moving forward.
Alliance/AFT is the largest teacher group in the school district. They have filed a request for a formal injunction or temporary restraining order against the Dallas ISD. An attorney for the group said that the selection process that trustees are going through, in order to form the home rule charter committee, violates Texas law.
"In yet another attempt to needlessly rush an unpopular and controversial overhaul of Dallas ISD, district administrators are now attempting to sidestep Texas State law," said Alliance/AFT president Rena Honea in a news statement. "Because the professional staff entrusted with selecting commission members were not themselves elected democratically but instead were appointed, they do not possess the legal authority to appoint members to the Commission."
Representatives from both sides of the debate are set to go before a state judge on Thursday. Alliance/AFT wants to stop the home rule charter from becoming a reality.
Trustees also plan to meet on Thursday for an update on their progress. They are expected to finish forming the committee in about a week.
