GARLAND (CBS11) - Two people carjacked a couple and then one of the suspects crashed the SUV.

One of the suspects is dead and police are searching for the person who managed to get away.

The crash happened near Interstate 30 and Jim Miller Road when a suspect crashed into a pole.

The impact was so intense, witnesses say the Nissan Pathfinder burst into flames and glass flew across the intersection.

Myesha Hicks, working at a nearby Waffle House, heard the boom.

"And then one of our customers who is sitting in the back booth said, 'Y'all, look!' And we see the fire, and the fire [is] starting to grow," said Hicks.

What she didn't know was that the man inside had allegedly committed a carjacking and led police on a chase. The carjacking happened about an hour earlier at Indian Lake Park in Garland.

The victims were a man and a woman who say two men approached them at gunpoint according to police. While the woman took off, the thieves stole the man's phone and car. He then ran to a nearby house for help.

"He was standing outside the door. And then we called the police because he was asking for help," says Yessica Salome.

He told her that he had been robbed and that someone was chasing his girlfriend.

"He was very scared. He was almost crying. He was trying to get help," Salome says.

Both victims were fine, but the second suspect got away.

Police say they found the first suspect driving the Pathfinder, but he took off at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. That led to the crash that killed him.

Salome says she's relieved the victims are okay and wishes the end had been different. "That's what happens when you make bad choices," Salome says.

The name of the man who died has not been released.

Garland Police hope the the public can help them find the second robbery suspect.
