Suspect Arrested In Rape Near SMU

UNIVERSITY PARK (CBSDFW.COM) - Police have arrested Torey Jamal Harris, for the alleged aggravated sexual assault that occurred on September 7, 2014 near the Southern Methodist University campus.

Harris was arrested by the Navarro College Department of Public Safety in Corsicana on an alleged aggravated sexual assault on September 15, 2014. He is currently being held at the Navarro County Jail.

Navarro College law enforcement officials noticed the artist sketch of the University Park suspect was similar in appearance to their suspect and they contacted University Park police detectives working the case.

"The crime he committed in their city was a similar crime as well," said University Park Police Chief Greg Spradlin.

Police said Harris used similar methods of attack in both assaults. He used an ice pick, according to police, to restrain Monday's victim. Police said he used a cutting tool during the crime, which happened in University Park. When police questioned Harris, Chief Spradlin said he confessed.

"In our case he asked the victim what her name was. When our detectives were conducting the interview of him, he repeated that name to our detectives."

That victim was an SMU student who told police she was raped at knife-point Sept. 7 in the 6700 block of Willard Drive about a half mile from campus. She reported that she was jogging  when the suspect grabbed her from behind.

Now that Harris is off the streets, many residents who live nearby the park where the assault happened are breathing a sigh of relief.

"I feel terrible cause I was walking my dog by here probably an hour and a half before it happened," said Schellas Hyndman.

Harris is from Dallas. Police said they don't know what led him to the outskirts of SMU or Navarro College.
