Support Shown For Families Of The Five Fallen Dallas Officers

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – It's been 11 years since Teresa Nava-Salazar experienced the same pain that five families of fallen police officers in Dallas our now feeling.
"It's heartbreaking to hear when another on has lost their life and you just know what that feels like," said Nava-Salazar
It was back in 2005 when her then husband Fort Worth Police Officer Henry "Hank" Nava Jr. was gunned down while on duty.
She said when she heard the news of what happened in downtown Dallas last week it was like deja vu.
"It just breaks my heart," she added.
Nava-Salazar said it was the support from the community and law enforcement that got her and her family through it all. It's that same kind of supports that we are now seeing for the five families of the Dallas's fallen officers.
John Hodge heads up a New York-based foundation called Tunnel To Towers. They provide financial and emotional support to the families of New York's fallen first responders.
Now, Hodge has traveled to Dallas to do the same for the families here.
"We are thinking about Dallasites. We love them and this our way of putting our arms around them and giving them a little hug," said Hodge
As of this article, Tunnel to Towers has raised $500,000 to be given to the families. Their goal is to raise $5 million in donations for them.
"If we can take away a little of the burden as far as finacnes and practical realities that's what we are here to do," said Hodge.
Nava-Salazar offered some advice for the families as they take their long journey of grief saying "Its not fair. Life is not fair but there is hope for the journey they are fixing to be on...just surround with those people let them help you get through this time."
