Support For Burglarized South Dallas Nonprofit

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A southeast Dallas nonprofit that feeds needy children will once again be serving meals after being burglarized earlier in the week.
Kathy's Sunshine Community Center in the historic Joppee Dallas neighborhood was forced to turn away children this past week as volunteers cleaned up after a burglar broke into the community center and stole thousands of dollars worth of supplies.
"I was very heartbroken about it because my first thought was 'God, how am I going to have this fixed?'" said Kathy Williams, who founded the center 11 years ago in the neighborhood she grew up in.
Williams, who is the one usually doing the helping, admitted that she did not know what to do. However, 10-year-old Sha'Kyah Burnley did. "I can help her out so she has food for the kids so they can eat," Burnley said, while collecting donations outside of a grocery store on Sunday.
Burnley, along with other children with the Stop the Violence group, organized a food drive for the center.
When others heard of what happened to the Joppee community center, volunteers replaced the window and donated enough money to replace what was stolen. Volunteers also upgraded the center's security system and air conditioning unit.
"It restored my belief in humanity," said Williams. "Everyone just came together."
