DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas Independent School District school board trustees approved a new budget late Thursday night. The package includes a pay raise for teachers and other district staff, but there's a lot of number crunching yet to be done.

The $1.4 billion budget for next school year calls for a 4-percent raise for teachers. That means the average teacher salary will increase to about $55,000. Starting salaries for newly hired teachers will now be around $50,000.

DISD workers who aren't teachers will get a 3-percent raise.

A huge improvement plan was another topic at the Thursday night meeting. The district is proposing spending $1.6 billion on new schools, classrooms and technology upgrades. But right now it's just a proposal.

To pay for those improvements, voters could be asked in November to approve a $1.6 billion bond package.
