Sunnyvale ISD Cancels Classes Tuesday, Wednesday Due To Flu

SUNNYVALE, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - An entire school district in North Texas is closing its doors for a couple of days because of a high number of flu-related cases among students and teachers.

Sunnyvale ISD administrators made the decision to close all three campuses on Tuesday and Wednesday after a spike in absences.

"If one kids has the flu, that's too many for us," said Superintendent Doug Williams. "When you're talking about 85 kids on the elementary campus, that's extreme."  

While each case has not been confirmed to be the flu, it left administrators no choice but to shutdown and clean with the elementary, middle and high school being so close.

"We always air on the side of caution, what's best for our kids. We don't want to have to do this. This was kind of an extreme move on our part," said Williams.

Parents were sent a notice on Monday.

"Once the bug is passed around and everyone is getting it, It's hard for you to get well," said Monique Davis, who has two kids in Sunnyvale ISD.

She supports the decision to close the school and hopes it gives those who are sick enough time to heal.

"Anyone can get it and germs…they spread very easily," said David.

Cleaning crews spent Monday evening cleaning classrooms. They will be back on Tuesday morning to conduct a more extensive scrubbing.

Since Sunnyvale ISD has 5 extra day built into the school year, students will not have to make up the days at the end of the year.
