COLLIN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - Several Plano students said they were caught off-guard Sunday night when they saw a message on Twitter from Plano ISD announcing classes on Monday were cancelled.
"I wasn't expecting it," said Plano West High School junior Ross Sakowski. "But it's awesome."
Several area districts, including Dallas ISD, Fort Worth ISD, and Plano ISD, made the decision to cancel Monday classes early Sunday evening.
During past winter storms, decisions were often made after district officials evaluated the road conditions in the morning of the day of school.
However, with the forecast calling for sleet and ice to hit the metro area during what would the time most student would be commuting to school, many district saw no need to wait.
The icy forecast also sent many Sunday to make last minute purchases at the grocery store.
At the Kroger on Highway 121 and Independence in Plano, the checkout lines were backed up with families buying cans of soup, bottled water, and bread.
"I am like, 'Oh my gosh I got to hurry because of the weather,'" said Lisa Harris. "I know I waited until the last minute but you just don't know what is going to happen tomorrow."
She said, "I just want to make sure we have everything we need."
