Kids Hurt In Waxahachie ISD Bus Crash
WAXAHACHIE (CBSDFW.COM) - A bus from the Waxahachie Independent School District was involved in a crash on Tuesday morning. The incident happened just a little bit before 7:00 a.m. along FM 879 in Ellis County. This is in the community of Boyce, situated between Waxahachie and Palmer.
Officials with the Ellis County Sheriff's Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that the school bus landed off of the road on its side with 20 children on board. Kyle Bradford with the Texas DPS said that the bus driver veered toward the median and then overcorrected, causing the school bus to overturn.
"The driver was apparently monitoring some of the children in the bus when he apparently went off the wrong side of the road," stated Sr. Trooper James Colunga with the Texas DPS. "He went off into oncoming lanes. He overcorrected and went into the ditch, which caused the vehicle to roll."
As with most school buses, there were no seatbelts to help protect the kids.
There has been no information regarding the ages of all of the students, but 12 kids reported injuries. Five of the kids were taken to Baylor Medical Center in Waxahachie and the other seven students were taken to Children's Medical Center in Dallas. "They're not life threatening," said Bradford about the injuries. "Hopefully it's just a precautionary thing."
The most serious injury was to a 7-year-old child who suffered a broken arm. The other injuries were primarily bumps and bruises. Those students who were not taken to a nearby hospital were treated at the scene.
School district officials said that the bus driver was not seriously hurt, but was also transported to the hospital.
"I want to applaud the emergency crews for their quick action to help our students and families," said Waxahachie ISD Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Glenn in a released statement. "I am grateful for their dedication to our district, students and community. The safety and security of our students will always be our number one priority."
