Student Dies After Shooting At Texas Southern University

HOUSTON (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Houston police say a man has died after being shot during a disturbance at a Texas Southern University dormitory parking lot.

Police on Tuesday announced an upgraded murder charge against a man suspected in last week's gunfire, which also left a woman wounded.

Harris County jail online records show 20-year-old Darrius Nichols was being held on murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges. Bond was set at $300,000. Officials have said the 20-year-old, whose last address is listed in Cedar Hill, does not attend TSU.

Authorities are trying to determine what sparked the Aug. 26 gunfire. Police say 24-year-old LaKeytrick Quinn died at a hospital two days after being shot.

The injured woman was treated and released from a hospital.

A TSU officer saw a gunman fire toward a crowd. The man refused to drop his gun and turned toward the officer, who shot at the suspect but missed.

The suspect surrendered.

Texas Southern University is a historically black university, accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
