ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - A female student at Sam Houston High School had possession of a loaded gun to school Tuesday morning and Arlington Police recovered it without incident.

Leslie Johnston, spokesperson for Arlington ISD, said another student reported the gun on campus.

"The Arlington Police Department quickly recovered the weapon.  There was no incident or altercation involving the weapon," said Johnston.

Arlington police said three students were arrested.  Police said a boy brought the gun to school and put it inside a girl's backpack.

Johnston said the school district is taking appropriate disciplinary action against the students.

"Student safety and security are a priority for everyone so we'll continue to evaluate our security and we'll have additional security on campus the next few days."

Johnston explained due to final exams, backpacks won't be allowed on campus on Thursday and Friday.

She said it's not yet clear why the student brought the gun to campus.

AISD did not release the students' ages, classifications or punishments.
