Storms Damage Byron Nelson Tournament
IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - Crews worked late Monday night to get the Byron Nelson Championship back on track after storms damaged the annual golf tournament shortly before its scheduled start.
Opening ceremonies were moved indoors as workers at the Four Seasons Las Colinas golf course continued to clean up and repair storm damage. Strong winds and rain blew through the area. Most of the damage was to tree branches which were torn down and scattered all over the course.
The biggest casualty at the tournament was the large video leaderboard. Winds knocked the entire board down. An event spokesperson said that a new leaderboard should be in place by Wednesday, and there should be no impact on the golf tournament. Officials are not yet sure how much the repairs will cost, but say the damage could have been much worse.
"We had guys in the Pavilion, they said it was really kind of rattling," said tournament chairman Patton Chapman. "We were over on the Verandah with the people who had got off the course of the Pro-Am and it seemed to get steadily worse and worse and worse. I think we dodged a bullet, that's for sure."
The tournament actually begins on Thursday, but other events and practices are planned throughout Tuesday and Wednesday.
