Steer Briefly Escapes At State Fair

DALLAS (AP) - Authorities have recaptured a nearly 1,000-pound steer that briefly escaped captivity at the State Fair of Texas and led city police on a chase amid fairgoers.

The 1-year-old animal traveled about 1,300 feet before it was corralled. A Central Texas teenager had brought the bovine to be shown at a livestock competition this week.

The fair's vice president of agriculture and livestock says the steer was being bathed in the cattle barn when a loud noise scared it. Several Dallas police officers and animal handlers chased it through the fair while warning patrons to stay away.

The escape lasted about 10 minutes.

The vice president says the animal "made contact" with at least five people during its run and that a fair employee was treated for anxiety.
