Stars Hire Laxdal To Coach AHL Affiliate

FRISCO (AP) - The Dallas Stars have hired Derek Laxdal as coach of the American Hockey League's Texas Stars after Willie Desjardins was selected to lead the Vancouver Canucks.

Laxdal just led the Edmonton Oil Kings to their second Western Hockey League title in his four seasons as coach. The 48-year-old had a record of 182-83-23 with the Oil Kings.

The Texas Stars won this year's AHL title under Desjardins.

Before coaching Edmonton's WHL team, Laxdal spent five seasons at the helm of Dallas' ECHL affiliate, the Idaho Steelheads. He won the ECHL title in 2007.

Laxdal's minor league teams have made the playoffs in 11 of his 12 seasons as a head coach.
