Southwest Airlines Changing Its Look

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Southwest Airlines officials broke champagne bottles over a newly painted plane as the carrier showed off its brand new look at a company event held in Dallas on Monday morning. This is all a part of the airline's effort to generate new enthusiasm for its extended flights starting later this year.

The event was held inside of a hangar at the Southwest Airlines headquarters next to Dallas Love Field. Around 200 employees, from executives to mechanics to flight attendants, were on hand for the unveiling.

Dark blue is still the primary color on the new planes, but red and yellow swooshes are being added to the tail and wings, along with a heart symbol that represents a new logo for the company. The heart is intended to tie the air carrier back to its home at Dallas Love Field. "You've got a five-foot heart on the belly of that aircraft that our employees will see on the ground and our customers will see in the air," said executive vice president Bob Jordan.

"The heart, the love, that's their whole image," added flight attendant Lucretia Wren.

The changes will also be reflected elsewhere throughout the company, including the ticketing counters and employee uniforms. Southwest Airlines has been working on this new look for around a year. "I'm looking forward to that," said mechanic Robert Bennett. "It's big and beautiful. We love new airplanes out here."

While the airline's first official introduction of the updated livery came during the Monday morning event, the carrier was not able to keep the new look a total surprise. Pictures of an updated Boeing 737 plane leaked onto the internet over the weekend.

The change comes as Southwest Airlines starts offering international flights, expands operations in some markets, and prepares for the total repeal of the Wright Amendment in North Texas. With the Wright Amendment restrictions going away in just over a month, Southwest Airlines wants to position itself as the main airline at Dallas Love Field, even though it will face competition from Virgin America.
